SABC COO justifies SAfm changes

SABC’s Chief Operations Officer, Chris Maroleng says one of the reasons for the recent changes to the broadcaster’s SAfm was that the station was running at a loss amounting to millions of rand.

Maroleng was briefing parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communication as part of the SABC executives who are appearing before parliament on Thursday.

He told the committee that serious interventions had to be made to attract listenership.

Maroleng says their target is to grow the listenership of SAfm from 143 000 to 600 000 listeners by 2020.

He says the station was running at a loss of approximately R35 million, a significant loss not just for the station but the SABC requiring to review the business model of the station in order to allow the station to break even.
