South African Airways (SAA) has denied that it failed to consult unions before announcing to the media that it is embarking on a restructuring process that may lead to job losses.

SAA says unions failed to attend a meeting last week and says written notices were sent to the worker representatives.

It said the restructuring process is crucial to its turnaround strategy.

This comes after National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) said it does not believe that the airline had exhausted all its options before opting to retrench workers.
