SA unemployment at highest level in 11 years

South Africa’s unemployment has worsened.

Figures released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) for the third quarter show that it has risen to 29.1%, the highest level in 11 years.

This is compared to 29% in the second quarter.

The total number of unemployed people in South Africa remained unchanged in the third quarter at 6.7 million.

According to Stats SA, formal sector employment increased by 43 000, agriculture increased by 38 000 and private household increased by 35 000.

The informal sector shed 53 000 jobs during this period.
