SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux has welcomed the awarding of the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament to Cape Town.
The announcement was made in Tokyo, Japan after the World Rugby Council held its interim meeting.
In September 2022, the eighth edition of the event will take place at Cape Town Stadium, with it being the first time the tournament has been hosted on the Africa continent.

Roux says the country has been eager to host the tournament for years.
“In the bigger scheme of things, we are also happy about the fact that we will provide an aspirational platform, not only for our own players but for those in Africa. It is something that our country can look forward to and yet another opportunity for social cohesion in our country and to deliver sport; which is probably the best vehicle to deliver cohesion in our country,” adds Roux.
