President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent messages of condolences to Algeria following the military plane crash in which more than 250 were killed.

The crash happened shortly after it took off from Boufarik military airport near the capital Algiers on Wednesday.

The army’s chief of staff has ordered an investigation into the cause of the incident.

International Relations Minister Lindiwe Sisulu also conveyed government’s condolences.

“It is a tragedy that is of phenomenal proportions, happening at a time when the representatives of Western Sahara were here because we support them in their administrative work and we had a very long deliberation with them around their situation. They invited me to go to Western Sahara. It is a tragedy of unimaginable proportions.”
