Reading Time: < 1 minute

Black Rhino have returned to West Africa in a deal struck between South Africa and Chad. Poaching saw the complete extinction of the species in that part of the world more than four decades ago.

Black Rhino remains endangered as poachers hunt them to sell the horns to the lucrative black market. The Chadian government vows it won’t allow Rhino to become targets of poachers again.

The last time Chadians saw Black Rhino was in the 1970’s, when poachers mainly from neighbouring Sudan massacred the last one.

The new arrivals will enjoy security fit for a president, three specially trained ranger units will guard the rhino 24/7.

They’ll have back up from soldiers and more importantly, the communities which reside within the boundaries of the Park.

The return of the Black Rhino means Zakouma boasts Big Five status again.

Park officials says apart from a bit of jet lag, the relocation of the rhino should be smooth and if all goes according to plan, they expect the first pink feet in the next two years.
