SA awaits clarity on Zuma resignation

Reading Time: < 1 minute

South Africa is now waiting for confirmation from the African National Congress (ANC), that the national executive committee (NEC) has resolved to recall President Jacob Zuma.

SABC news understands this was the decision after the 13 hourlong marathon NEC meeting which started on Monday afternoon in Irene.

President Jacob Zuma allegedly rejected an ultimatum to resign within 48 hours. The NEC also rejected his request to stay on for 3 months longer.

It’s believed that this resolution was communicated to President Zuma by ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and Secretary General Ace Magashule at Mahlamba Ndlopdu in Pretoria.

The Presidency has also not verified these statements or whether the President has agreed to step down. The party is expected to outline who will be interim president and deputy president.

Late on Monday, SABC News reliably learnt that President Zuma agreed to step down, a move that led overnight flurry of activities to engage the Presidency for a final decision.
