Rugby player murders ex-girlfriend

A 33-year-old rugby player is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.

It’s alleged that he stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death and also stabbed and injured himself.

The incident has again shone the light on the country’s femicide statistics.

South Africa’s femicide rate is five times more than the global average.

A family is searching for answers after their 28-year-old daughter, Refilwe Letebele, was stabbed to death at her house.

The suspect is her ex-lover.

Distraught family members are battling to come to terms with their loss.

Norman Letebele, father of deceased says, “We are traumatised; we are saddened; we are looking for answers. We wish somebody could answer us and tell us what happened. Why at this time? Did my daughter deserve to die like this?”

The 33-year-old Universal Club rugby player in Kimberley has been admitted to hospital. He’s being kept under police guard.

Police Spokesperson Lt.Col. Dimakatso Mooi, says, “The police in Kimberley are investigating a case of murder, after a 33-year-old man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death and after that he also stabbed himself. He is currently in hospital and he will be arrested and the investigation will be continuing in a case of murder.”

Refilwe will be laid to rest on Saturday in Kimberley.
