Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has resigned in a letter submitted to Parliament. Parliamentary Speaker, Jacob Mudenda, has confirmed his resignation. Wild jubilation broke out among MPs when Mudenda told the House.

Mugabe was under pressure from members of his own party ZANU PF to step down. The party earlier recalled him as its president. Zimbabweans and students earlier took to the streets calling on the 93-year-old leader to step down.

His letter reads as follows: I Robert Gabriel Mugabe hereby formally tender my resignation as President of Zimbabwe with immediate effect.
