Residents of Riverlea, an area south of Johannesburg, say an abandoned opencast mine left by the Central Rand Gold (CRG) mine poses a danger to the community.

The mine which began operations in 2010, amidst opposition from some residents, is one of 6 000 abandoned mines countrywide. It went bankrupt in February this year.

CRG had amongst its shareholders, controversial figures Kenny Kunene and Gayton McKenzie.

The mine promised jobs, development and even scholarship opportunities to the Riverlea community.

Benchmarks’ David van Wyk says, “What government should do is, it should hold the owners of those mines accountable.”
