Rhoda Kadalie on being Coloured in a new South Africa

In the context of Heritage Day and Heritage Month, Abra Barbier tackled the thorny topic of what it means to be Coloured in South Africa.

For many, including academic and political activist Rhoda Kadalie, the term “Coloured” was regarded as an insult. Fighting against apartheid under the non-racial United Democratic Front’s banner in the 1980’s, Kadalie believed this was a “negative classification” meant to further divide South Africans. Today, things have however changed.
