US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has welcomed the announcement by President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga that the two leaders had resolved to bury their differences following last year’s general elections that have plunged Kenya into a political crisis.

Tillerson refused to take credit for the meeting and said the two had shown a commitment to unite the country.  He however warned that Kenya should not stifle free media and a free judiciary. The top US diplomat is in Kenya on a two-day state visit.

On arrival in Kenya, Secretary Tillerson met President Uhuru Kenyatta. At a joint press conference with Cabinet Secretary for foreign affairs, Monicah Juma, Tillerson praised Friday’s meeting between Kenyatta and Odinga .

He pledged America’s commitment to supporting regional peace efforts, including the fight against militant group Al Shabab and the end to South Sudan’s conflict.

Kenya also denied that it was taking sides in the ongoing conflict in South Sudan.

Talks between Kenyatta and Odinga follow intense international pressure especially from the US.
