Residents owe North West municipalities R1 billion

Residents in Brits in North West owe the Madibeng municipality R1 billion for services rendered.

The Madibeng and Matlosana municipality in Klerksdorp were put under administration. A report issued by the National Treasury has indicated that South Africans owe municipalities across the country 128 billion rand.

Acting Municipal Manager for Madibeng, Grace Magole says, “Currently, the municipality is owed by different businesses, government and households  – the total amount of one billion rand. Out of this total amount, government owes R74 million. Businesses are R347 million and households amounts to R1.3 billion.”

Meanwhile, the provincial Local Government and Human Settlements says the non-payment of services by residents to the municipalities has a negative impact in their performance.
