Residents in E Cape village threaten to boycott IEC voter registration

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Residents of Mahenge village at Ports St Johns in the Eastern Cape have threatened to prevent government or IEC officials from doing voter registration in the village next weekend.

They are blaming the local municipality for side-lining them in the provision of basic services. They’ve also posted notices discouraging people from co-operating with officials.

“For a long time we have never had any water, the people do not have jobs, there is absolutely nothing here for the people. We love the ANC because they set us all free but the people who are working for the ANC are a problem. We even hardly see the police here, you call the ambulance there is no response, it’s very bad, some of the children here do not have birth certificates.”
