Researcher revisits the story of SS Waratah

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A Cape Town researcher and expeditioner has written a book on what is referred to as the greatest sea mystery of modern times.

The SS Waratah, a 150-metre long cargo liner steamship, disappeared in 1909 between Durban and Cape Town, with 211 passengers and crew onboard.

Sixty-two-year old Emlyn Brown has spent more than two decades searching for the ship, but to this day, there has been no success in locating the wreck.

Brown says his book entitled “The Mystery runs deep” not only records the history of the ship, but also tells the story of his personal journey to research and fund 14 expeditions to find the ill fated Waratah.

“Clues are graphically, and very well detailed in my book. It is all illustrated for the reader to follow and understand not only my journey, but the history, of where the ship could have sunk… and the circumstances that would have seen her go down off the Wild coast; so you need to think of the Waratah story as a mix between the Poseidon adventure and the perfect storm.”
