Gauteng Health MEC Dr Gwen Ramokgopa spent Workers’ Day with a stethoscope around her neck showing solidarity with staff at Mamelodi’s Stanza Bopape Clinic.

It is an overburdened and under-resourced clinic. Any help is welcome, even more so if it is the Gauteng Health MEC.

Ramokgopa attended to patients, and also got first-hand experience of lacking resources.

“Stanza has been experiencing a high load of patients, I think 5 000 or so since February and there is also been tension between the users and our staff because of long queues and all that, so it is also to say that we know that you are providing services under these conditions that are not necessarily ideal, but we do care for you and we will do everything possible to create a better environment,” says Ramokgopa.

Stanza Bopape Clinic’s Dr Bahupeleng Mashaba says, “There’s shortage of staff and our patients are increasing. The numbers are increasing day in day out, and even the equipment, so that when we are there we have everything that we need for them.”

Ramokgopa says a nearby clinic is being revamped to ease pressure on Stanza Bopape.
