Ramaphosa promises to build houses in Alexandra

African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to build houses in Alexandra Township, north of Johannesburg, but could not say when.

Ramaphosa addressed thousands of Alexandra residents who have been protesting over housing, crime and waste management among other.

The ANC president was accompanied by Home Affairs Minister Dr Siyabonga Cyprian Cwele, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Small Business Enterprises Minister Lindiwe Zulu, among others.

He said they will revive the Alexandra Renewal Project, but could not provide timeframes.

The president’s visit to the area follows sporadic protests by frustrated residents over the mushrooming of illegal dwellings and service delivery challenges.

On Monday residents of Alexandra marched to the regional offices of the City of Johannesburg in Sandton to raise their grievances.

However, they were disappointed after Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba whom they’ve been asking to meet with them failed to receive their memorandum.
