President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is humbled by the vote of confidence the world has shown to South Africa.

On Friday, United Nations members elected South Africa to serve on the UN Security Council for a non-permanent two-year term.

On his arrival in Quebec, Canada for the G7 Summit on Friday night, Ramaphosa promised to execute the country’s new duties at the UN with diligence and dignity.

“We’re very pleased with the success of our bid because we join a group of nations that will be sitting in the Security Council.  We’re delighted that many nations, 183 nations around the world have invested their confidence in us to sit in the UN and I think this is a recognition of the ability of SA to be able to represent the views of many African nations and also to represent a progressive line of thought and also to participate in the multilateral organisation like the UN.”

“We had a wonderful exchange of views with business leaders, well over 130 leaders and the occasion was oversold which shows a great new interest in the affairs of our country and particularly South Africa. They recognize the new period we are in, the new dawn, the new era and they are warming up to SA and particular in relation to regaining their level of confidence.”

“Well a successful discussion possibly threefold, the interaction that we’ve had with business in Toronto has been wonderful, will yield really good results in the investment fold, tomorrow our interaction on the outreach side of the G7 with a number of other African countries is where we will be putting forward the African story to the G7.”
