Cyril Ramaphosa has officially been sworn in as the President of South Africa.

MPs in the National Assembly elected Ramaphosa unopposed on Thursday afternoon.

Ramaphosa took the oath of office during the swearing in ceremony over which Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng presided at Tuynhuys in Cape Town.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Theresa May has congratulated President Ramaphosa on his election as the fifth President of South Africa.

She has expressed a desire to work closely with him in the future.

This comes after the Head of the United Kingdom-based Commonwealth said she hoped relations between the country and the organisation would improve.
