Ramaphosa to honour fallen soldiers

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In one of his first public duties, President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Sunday morning attend an inter-faith prayer service organised by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

The prayer will be in remembrance of soldiers who died on the line of duty and those deployed to war-torn countries for peacekeeping missions.

The prayer service will be held in Kimberley as part of the build-up to the official commemoration of Armed Forces Day on Wednesday.

The day also commemorates the sinking of the SS Mendi in 1917. SANDF General Mafi Mgobozi says it will be an eventful day.

“The president is very happy it will be the first that he meets with the soldiers and even the military command council of the defence force during the church service. The prayer is to remember those who died in the line of duty and also to pray for those who doing their duties even outside the country and the borders and those who are still serving.”
