President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will play an active role to help curb the shedding of jobs in the country.

Ramaphosa was addressing a Presidential Golf Challenge Prize giving Gala Dinner at Century City in Cape Town. He has committed to work with unions to engage employers to save jobs.

“If for instance, and I want Dennis George to listen as well… if for instance if there is going to be a  a sub-sector of our economy that sheds jobs, my job is not going to be sitting in my office. It is going to be, let us go and engage with the company and find out why it is happening? What can we do to help them not to shed jobs? Because that is what is important.”

Ramaphosa says he also will keep track of how many jobs are created on a weekly basis.  He says 2018 is going to be the year of job creation.

“I am going to be seeing my role as President, as the person who will almost every week be asking those who are responsible who I work with, a single question. How many jobs did we create this week? That is the question I will be asking. So that is the focus I am going to seek to have.”
