Ramaphosa to consult ahead of his anticipated cabinet reshuffle

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to widely consult ahead of his anticipated cabinet reshuffle.

He is seeking to re-shape his administration after being sworn in as President of the Republic two weeks ago.

He is expected to consult as is the norm, the African National Congress’s alliance partners.

The President may also have to consult with opposition parties -as the practice by previous Presidents has always included a member.

The country is on tenterhooks and speculation on a new cabinet is on overdrive. But the man at the helm will not be rushed.

It’s not clear whether consultations have begun. However, the SACP says it’s ready to talk to Ramaphosa on the cabinet and on its own political principles.

On Monday  a meeting was held at Luthuli House, where he is expected to put the final touches on his new cabinet list.

The one thorny issue is that of the Deputy President.

ANC deputy president David Mabuza was expected to only take the reins after the 2019 election.

But it now appears he’s keen to be appointed immediately. So too are the other names as people toil with the idea of gender parity.

These include Naledi Pandor, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Lindiwe Sisulu and Baleka Mbete.

Mbete once served as deputy president. For the new President it’s a fine balancing act, he needs to put to bed speculation.

And ensure all stakeholders are on board as he undertakes to revitalise the economy and reinstall national pride.
