Ramaphosa cleans up SSA

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Cyril Ramaphosa has moved to clean-up intelligence which has been accused of being ineffective. He’s appointed a high-level review panel to look at its mandate, capacity and organisational integrity.

It will be chaired by former Safety and Security Minister Sydney Mufamadi.

The replacement of State Security Minister Bongani Bongo by Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba under the new Ramaphosa administration and abrupt transfer of the SSA’s director general Arthur Fraser to correctional services in April were indications that a process of renewal was underway within the country’s intelligence services.

The decision to review it, is a long time coming. Ten years ago the Mathews Commission into the intelligence services revealed politicisation, abuse of process and lack of accountability by the country’s intelligence.

The appointment of a high level panel into the SSA has been welcomed by some experts within the security field, who say it’s long overdue.

The 10 member review panel expects to conclude its works in the next three months. The President also appointed former minister Charles Nqakula as his national security advisor.

There have been a number of high profile reports alleging that components of security are not operating as they should.
