African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended the work done by the police task team investigating political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.

He has, however, cautioned against making hasty arrests.

Ramaphosa was speaking on uKhozi FM’s current affairs show after his campaign trail in KwaMashu Township, north of Durban.

Last week the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) provisionally withdrew charges against ANC Harry Gwala district mayor, Mluleki Ndobe and uMzimkhulu municipal manager, Zweliphansi Skhosana, citing insufficient evidence.

Ndobe spent eight days behind bars.

Ramaphosa says police should arrest when they have evidence.

He also says the task team should continue doing its work without political interference.

“A lot of people have died here in KwaZulu-Natal in political attacks. We’ve established a committee to investigate since a lot of people have been arrested others have been sentenced so we can see there are results showing.”

“We say the law should take its course but when they do their job we want them to be absolutely certain and not arrest people without proper evidence.”

Earlier during a public meeting in KwaMashu Township, Ramaphosa said the ANC-led government has made great strides since the dawn of democracy.

“Today, elderly pension is R1 600 every month. And they are happy with that. Today 17.5 million are getting social grants and we must applaud the ANC for that it cares about people. We have built 4.3 million. We are now saying once your child turns three years old he or she must start pre-school education.”

Meanwhile, the party’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Chairperson, Sihle Zikalala, registered his concern about the manner in which party members conduct themselves during court appearances of fellow members accused of serious cases.

Ramaphosa’s campaign trail continues in the province on Sunday.
