Ramaphosa accepts blame on Marikana disaster

Reading Time: 2 minutes

ANC NEC member and businessman, Cyril Ramaphosa has put the blame for the Lonmin Marikana mine disaster, in which 45 people were killed, squarely on the shoulders of all stakeholders including himself. Ramaphosa says what happened in Marikana should not have happened in the first place.”I think a lot of us as stakeholders are to blame. Marikana should not have happened, we are all to blame and there are many stakeholders that should take the blame. But taking the blame should mean that we should make sure it never ever happens again.” Ramaphosa has also apologised profusely for taking part in an auction in which he bid for a huge buffalo cow and calf worth around R18 million. Ramaphosa spoke about his relationship with Lonmin Marikana Platinum mine in which more than 40 people were killed. Ramaphosa says he betrayed his principles. “Yes I did put a bid and that was a mistake on my part. It was a mistake, I regret it. It was a mistake to even put up my hand to do so, and I’ve been chastised by some of my good comrades and even before the chastised me I did admit that that was a mistake. I regret it because I mean it’s an excessive price in the seas of poverty I belong to a community and it was one of those moments when I was blind sighted.”
