More than 30 traditional dancing groups have competed in the final of the annual Phalaphala FM and Radzambo Cultural Foundation traditional dancing competition held at Makhuvha Stadium outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo on Saturday. They competed in various categories including Makgakgasi, Makhwaya and Tshikona.
The annual traditional dance competition has been held for more than 30 years and is aimed at promoting social cohesion and preserving culture.
Some people, who competed in the final, say to them it’s not about winning.
“To perform here is important just because I make my tradition higher (sic),” says one of the participants.
“I feel very much great we have been here and we are from Tiyani. This protects our culture actually. It saves our culture,” says another.
Chief Livhuwani Matsila of Radzambo Cultural Foundation, organiser of the traditional dancing competitions, says they’re achieving their objective of uniting people.
“We have been able to achieve our objectives, which is the promotion and the preservation and the development of arts and culture, especially the agenda on social cohesion and nation building, uniting people in the region and the province. What we have seen is the growth in terms of the number of participants, especially in terms of groups,” says Matsila.
