Limpopo’s Agriculture Department has put aside R16 million to fight the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the Vhembe district.
The veterinarians are vaccinating cattle.
MEC Basikopo Makamu has been monitoring the vaccination process in Vuwani and Njhakanjhaka areas. The outbreak was reported at Sundani village.
The export of products from cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs and goats have been stopped.
Makamu says they want to fight the outbreak within a short period.
A communal cattle farmer Wilson Musunwa has urged government to continuously vaccinate cattle and improve the cattle dip.
“We want government to assist us because we don’t know a lot of things. We have challenges here and we fix this cattle dip ourselves. We need government intervention to ensure that this dip is in good condition,” Musunwa.
