Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane says he is satisfied with the work done at the multi million rand Aqua project in Graaf Reinet.

The department invested more than R9 million to develop the project

Qoboshiyane visited the project to look at the progress made in constructing the aquaculture tunnels. The project can now produce about 120 tons of catfish per month.

The project has resulted in the establishment of a new factory in the Karoo, which has employed more than a hundred people. This project is part of operation Phakisa‘s oceans economy development.

Qoboshiyane says the project has also sourced aqua-marine graduates from institutions of higher learning and also employed locals.

“Some of the people from townships here are able to get employment as production managers, and many of them are in the area of nursery, others are in the fish farming production, others are in the processing section of this company. Now they are retailing all that they are able to produce in this particular area to retail shops locally. The intention is to change the quality of life, food security, nutritious value of what they can produce locally, employing people from the area, and expanding the enterprise.”
