Putin arrives in SA for BRICS summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in South Africa for the BRICS summit.

Chinese leader Xi Jin-Ping, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Michel Temer are already in the country.

The 10th BRICS leaders’ summit is being held in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, the five BRICS leaders will on Thursday go on a retreat at Maropeng north-west of Johannesburg, site of a centre devoted to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is to host his counterparts from China, Russia, Brazil and India.

Chinese leader Xi Jin-Ping, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Michel Temer on joined President Ramaphosa at the Brics Business Forum, along with about a thousand business delegates from the Brics countries.

Xi and Ramaphosa both expressed concern about a possible trade war resulting from recent protective tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump and retaliatory tariffs introduced by other countries.
