Public Protector asked to probe Joburg mayor

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress in the City of Johannesburg has once again approached the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane to investigate executive Mayor Herman Mashaba this time for allegedly paying over R11 million to an NGO to provide services to the Municipality.

Mashaba is accused of initiating the funding for the Field Band Foundation without any written proposal sent to the City by the Foundation.

The ANC’s Johannesburg Regional Spokesperson, Jolidee Matongo says Mashaba resigned from the FBF, an NGO that he had been chairperson of for sixteen years and what they describe as his favourite.

“Six months into office he has now solicited the funding of this NGO without soliciting proposals from other NGOs. The money has been secured by the city for funds for the NGO even without the NGO submitting a proposal. This is a direct conflict of interest on the part of mayor Mashaba. We have already submitted evidence to the public protector to further probe this matter and will ask the speaker of council to send mr Mashaba to the ethics committee of council.”
