The new salaries came into effect in April this year but have only recently been gazetted. This means that the new salaries will be backdated to April and paid from the end of November.

In Parliament, the presiding officers will earn as much as the deputy president. The Chief Whip of the majority African National Congress (ANC) and Opposition Leader Mmusi Maimane both earn more than R1.6 million. MP’s now earn just over R1.1 million.

In the provinces, a premier can expect more than R2.3 million a year, while an MEC gets just over R2 million.

At local government level, a mayor will earn more than R1.3 million and the Chief Justice also earns more than R2.9 million.
