PSC plans to engage with Zuma

The Public Service Commission says it’s planning to engage President Jacob Zuma on the powers he has over Director Generals (DGs).

The commission has since written to the Public Service and Administration Minister on the matter, raising concerns over ministers’ powers to hire and fire DG’s.

This follows the matter between Home Affairs DG Mkuseli Apleni and former Minister of Home Affairs Hlengiwe Mkhize, where the High Court found that the minister did not have the powers to suspend the DG.

PSC commissioner Michael Seloane briefed the media in Pretoria on Wednesday.

“Even if we meet with the President at some stage we will also raise this issue, it becomes problematic as you know that a number of DGs were suspended by ministers. We don’t know what will be happening. It’s still the matter between them and the employer.”
