PSA set to strike on Monday

The Public Service Association (PSA) has vowed to cripple the economy, and is warning of major disruptions when public servants go on strike on Monday.

This follows a breakdown in wage negotiations with government.

PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks, says the Association has issued strike notices for June 11, based on the failure to present reasonable salary offers in the public service and at SASSA.

Workers want a 10 to 12 percent salary increase‚ while PSA Minister, Ayanda Dlodlo, is offering 7 per cent.

Speaking during a media briefing in Pretoria, PSA Deputy General Secretary Tahir Maepa says the union is also threatening to shut down all ports of entry.

Maepa says, “We are forging ahead with our strike action, and we are going to continue and make sure it becomes a success. In terms of how much people are expected, we are expecting disruption, it’s not about the numbers who are going to come and march. We are expecting to close down all the border gates of this country.”

“We are withdrawing all our prosecutors from prosecuting anybody in this country. We are closing down the depth of water affairs where we have a majority. So our disruption is going to hit where it matters the most. This country is going to lose billions because things would never be able to move in and out of the country,” Maepa says.

Maepa says the union will not call on those in the health sector to strike as their work involves caring for the vulnerable in society, “we are not going to call on health workers to go on strike. That is very irresponsible.”
