The Inter-ministerial Committee (IMC) on former President Nelson Mandela’s Centenary and the Centenary of Albertina Sisulu has outlined a series of events to mark the 100 year anniversary since the birth of the two struggle icons.

The theme for marking Sisulu’s anniversary will be a “A woman of fortitude” while Madiba will be honoured under the theme “Be the legacy”.

Among the activities planned to mark Sisulu’s centenary is the Albertina Sisulu Executive Leadership Programme in Health Graduation Ceremony held on the 4th of this month in conjunction with the universities of Fort Hare, Pretoria and Harvard.

The IMC will also be supporting the Sisulu family in their programme to search for the living participants of the 1956 Women’s March.

Events for the Mandela celebrations will include a national event on the 18th of July at Nasrec and the renaming of the Vanderkloof dam in September as well as a Nelson Mandela Tribute Seminar and Dinner on the margins of the UN General Assembly as well as the unveiling of a statue of Madiba at the UN complex.

Events will include among others the naming of a very rare and special Orchid after Ma Sisulu, the launch of her biographical book as well as an inter-generational dialogue on South African history.

Meanwhile, Mandela’s celebrations will in some cases feature national events such as #MandelaFridays to global events such as the International Nelson Mandela Day, as well as 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture to be delivered by former US President Barack Obama.

Inter-Ministerial Task Team Jeff Radebe says:”Today marks 70 days to the Nelson Mandela Centenary Day on 18 July 2018.”

Government calls on all South Africans and the international community to join in the centenary celebrations in their workplaces, schools, churches and civic organisations, as we reflect on the immense contribution these icons and global figures bequeathed our fledgling democracy.  Ours is to build on the foundations they laid.”
