World champions Germany play Mexico in a Group F match in Moscow on Sunday.

Where: Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow

Key stats:

– Four-time winners Germany are going into the tournament with the aim of becoming only the third nation after Italy and Brazil to defend their World Cup crown. No country has done it since the back-to-back titles of Brazil in 1958-1962.

– They have won the World Cup four times and have reached at least the semifinals in every tournament since 2002.

– After cruising through a perfect qualification with 10 wins out of 10 matches and conceding just four goals, the Germans have managed just one win in their last six games going into the tournament.

– Mexico have reached the Last 16 each of the last six World Cups, but their best record of a quarterfinal dates back to 1970 and 1986. In 1986, they lost to West Germany in the last eight.

Previous meetings: Germany have lost just once in 11 matches against the Mexicans and crushed them 4-1 last year en route to the Confederations Cup title. The world champions have also won all three of their encounters at World Cups and both Confederations Cup matches against them.

Their only win over the Germans dates back 33 years.
