Second Deputy General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) Solly Mapaila says African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa is not a weak man.

Mapaila’s statement stems from some members of the ruling party raising concerns that Ramaphosa’s attempts to unify the party had led to him making too many compromises.

His detractors have also questioned whether he is on control or not.

The persistent perceived divisions within the ANC and its alliance partners have brought criticism that the president has not shown decisiveness.

The president himself also dismissed suggestions labelling him a weak man, saying he has no intention of making any decisions that would divide the ruling party further.

Mapaila says Ramaphosa has strong steps for the alliance.

“We don’t have a weak president. He has proven himself to be very decisive from the first time when he was leader of the ANC. He took a strong decision on the Eskom board, he took a decisive decision on the commission on state capture and of course he has taken a decision on SARS…and all those are not small measures.”

Mapaila further urged Ramaphosa to take a firm stance against corruption and to always make sound decisions that will benefit the country.
