President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka as the new Deputy Public Protector. She takes over from Advocate Kevin Malunga whose seven-year term came to an end last month.

Parliament’s justice portfolio committee endorsed Gcaleka for the post in November, after she topped a list of seven candidates.

Gcaleka is a former Special Advisor in the Ministries of the National Treasury, Home Affairs and Public Service and Administration.

She previously also served as Senior State Advocate and Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Gcaleka is also a former National Chairperson of the Society of State Advocates of South Africa and a member of the Black Lawyers Association.

President Ramaphosa has wished Gcaleka well on her new role.
