Passenger Rail Agency, Prasa acting group CEO Nsizwa Molepo says they will soon introduce new trains, manufactured in South Africa.

He was speaking at a media briefing in Durban following incidents in which two passenger trains were set alight in the city this week.

There was an outcry during the past few years over Spanish locomotives ordered through an irregular tender that failed to meet Prasa’s height specifications.

Molepo says the new trains will have advanced technology to help protect and communicate with commuters.

“We have a factory for new trains, 20 trains that were manufactured in Brazil that have been delivered they are currently running. The infrastructure is being revitalised throughout the country to prepare for the deployment of the new trains across the country. As I speak to you, last week on Thursday we visited the factory in South Africa . With a local content of more than 67% that means the transfer of technology, it means skills development.”
