The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has paid more than R213 million to victims of train crashes in the past three financial years.

This was revealed by Transport Minister Blade Nzimande in a written reply to a parliamentary question.

The Minister added that this year alone, Prasa has paid-out more than R12.5 million.

Nzimande says it’s various factors that lead to injuries and fatalities of passengers. He says in the past three financial years nearly 2 000 people sustained injuries in either open line crossings of level crossings, while 48 died under the same circumstances.

The Minister has attributed the cause of these accidents to human error, theft and vandalism of signalling equipment, poor supervision and/or supervisory skills as well as non adherence to road traffic signs by motorists.
