More than 1 388 train coaches have been lost to vandalism and theft in the past three financial years, resulting in losses of more than R503 million, says Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Transport Manny de Frietas.

De Frietas says security personnel has also dropped by 30%, with Prasa losing 823 Metrorail train coaches and 565 from Shosholoza Meyl.

DA spokesperson Kabelo Mohlohlo says, “Clearly Prasa has failed to implement contingency plans to alleviate the scourge of vandalism and violence on our railway system. Rail safety is a national competency and it is Prasa’s responsibility to ensure efficient running of trains and ensure commuter safety for those who use this mode of transport.”

“The poor should not have to bear the brunt of years of poor management and bad decision making, adds Mohlohlo.
