Power of forgiveness

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a special session devoted to former president Nelson Mandela, former Springbok rugby captain Francois Pienaar choked up when he remembered Madiba wearing his Sprinbok rugby jersey at the 95 Rugby World Cup.

Pienaar was part of a panel which included political activist, Ahmed Kathrada and Rhodes scholar, Nobulali Dangazele. Pienaar says what he admires about Mandela was that, “He followed through on what he said he would do and this is his legacy.”

Kathrada had the audience made up of young leaders from across the globe emotional as he recounted their days in Robben Island.

He says, “Madiba stands for forgiveness and reconciliation”, and this is how he will remember Mandela always.

Dangazele emphasised education and how Mandela always strived for people to free their minds as “education is the silver bullet to unlock liberation”

Pienaar expressed anger at the lack of focus of education by world leaders on their agendas. The summit is currently underway at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, and ends on Saturday.
