Power crisis engineered so Eskom can be sold: Energy expert

Energy expert, Adil Nchabeleng has disputed the reasons given by Eskom for the current spate of loadshedding which started last week.

On Monday Eskom said it was forced to shed up to six-thousand megawatts of power, because the electrical supply panel to the conveyor belt that supplies coal to the Medupi power station burnt out.

The power utility has since downgraded to stage 4 loadshedding from stage 6.

Nchabeleng says the loadshedding is clearly an engineered crisis so that the power utility can be sold off.

“There is no crisis with regards to some of this issues that are cited, but we know for a fact that there is an intention now that is clearly coming out, that Eskom must be sold at all costs – and if it has to be literally brought down to its knees on the basis of unaffordability it is going to be the case. The issues around conveyor belt not being able to extract coal from the mines to convey directly to Eskom plants, it doesn’t make sense, because there is always a particular threshold of required coal reserve in a plant.”
