Earlier in January President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Party Funding Bill into law. The Political Party Funding Act was meant to start operating this past Monday, but has not yet been put into effect.
This means that currently political parties are still not compelled to disclose their funders.
Zahira Grimwood, a Party Funding researcher at My Vote Counts, explains:
“It’s now up to the Independent Electoral Commission finish drafting the regulation, consider the submissions of the public comments that were given to them on the regulations and the onus will be on them now to finalise these regulations and put the Act into operation.”
