Political parties in Parly agree on removal of ICASA chair

Political parties in Parliament’s Communications Portfolio Committee are unanimous in their support for the removal of ICASA Chairperson Rubben Mohlaloga.

On Monday, the National Assembly will consider and approve the committee’s report on Mohlaloga’s removal.

This comes after the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court found him guilty of fraud and money laundering earlier this year.

However, he is appealing the ruling.

Mohlaloga allegedly committed the offences when he was still with the Land Bank.

ANC Whip in the Committee Lerumo Kalako says, “Our Position as the ANC as we have forwarded it – that he must actually be removed. We have actually even asked the minister to immediately set in the processes for him to be removed as a chairperson and to be removed as a councillor so that we don’t have problems going forward. We don’t want to wait for court judgement or what. The sentence is there, the court judgement is there. Whatever happens, we don’t want to get involved in that, because we want a clean slate and the good image of ICASA.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of the committee Phumzile van Damme says they will support the committee’s report on removing Mohlaloga when it’s debated Monday.
