Political parties have until Wednesday to submit candidates list

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Political parties have until Wednesday the 13 of March to submit their candidates list to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) for participation in the May eighth general elections.

The list must be accompanied by a R45 000 registration deposit for each province a party wants to contest, as well as R200 000 to contest nationally.

Smaller parties are opting to contest in provinces where they believe they have strong support.

Limpopo’s Electoral Officer Nkaro Mateta says failure to pay the required amounts means not being able to compete in the polls.

“Political parties are seen streaming in at our national office in Centurion. Some of them are taking advantage of the online system of submission of candidates and they need to pay a deposit of R45 000 to contest each of the nine provinces and R200 000 to contest nationally.”

“We must also emphasise that there will be no extension. So the 13th when it comes 5 o’clock the candidate nomination shall be closed.”
