The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has warned that legislation for the administration of private funding to political parties, is unlikely to be ready in time for the national elections next year.
It briefed the National Council of Provinces’ Ad Hoc Committee on political party funding aimed at creating legislation that will regulate private funding to political parties.
It is envisaged that a unit to administer the funding will be established within the IEC.
IEC Chief Executive Officer, Sy Mamobolo, says they need to have realistic exceptions of how quickly the new legislation, once approved, will be implemented before the elections.
