Police probe ‘kidnapped pregnant’ woman incident

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Gauteng police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and safe return of a pregnant woman from Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni.

Twenty-two-year-old Mbalenhle Mvungande is said to have been just days away from giving birth when she was reported missing last week after failing to show up to meet her boyfriend.

Mvungande’s alleged kidnappers sent the man photographs of the woman, gagged and crying, and messages saying that they just wanted her unborn baby and would not harm her.

The police’s Lungelo Dlamini says the woman, now not visibly pregnant, was brought to the police station by her aunt on Wednesday.

“When she arrived at the station she had no baby and police are going to investigate all those allegations that she was nine months pregnant when she disappeared. Police are still investigating all the circumstances regarding her disappearance, but she was brought to the station by her aunt and the aunt immediately took her to the hospital. At this stage we are still investigating a case of kidnapping. We haven’t opened any case against the victim.”
