Police officers urged to undergo medical check-ups

Police Minister Bheki Cele has urged members of the police service, particularly males, to always undergo medical check-ups to determine their health status regarding cancer and other chronic diseases.

Cele encouraged them to seek psychological help when they have experienced trauma and severe stress in their line of duty. This comes as South African Police Services concluded their two-day Health and Wellness Indaba in Pretoria.

The Cancer Association of South Africa says about 100 000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year . Cele has urged police officers to take training exercises serious as that will assist to keep their bodies fit and healthier.

“Cancer is a killer but Minister [Aaron] Motsoaledi has always said diabetes and TB kills more. I’m not a doctor but I know our bodies must be an anchor of resistance. I want to start from there. But there’s a new one and I don’t know where it comes from, these suicides.”
