“Police murderers should be given special trial by courts”

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Police Minister Bheki Cele would have liked to see those who kill police officers given a special trial by the courts. He says it’s the norm internationally that when you kill a police officer – you are attacking the state.

Cele was in Germiston Magistrates Court where he had attended the case of four men accused of killing Constable Motlalentoa Mahlatsi.

The police officer was shot and killed while responding to a complaint in Elsburg in Germiston, on Gauteng’s East Rand, last week.

One of the four accused has been linked to another murder of a police officer.

The case has been postponed to the end of July.

“Many countries would have a special trial when it comes to killing the police. Well South Africa we have human rights, we have Constitution everybody has same rights.”

“But indeed we will if asked to make sure that those that kill the police they really get a special kind of trial, a special kind of treatment and say to them you are not going to attack the state and go and sleep at home.”
