Police monitor Taung and Vryburg following protests

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Police in North West have continued to monitor Taung and Vryburg overnight following violent protests that erupted there on Sunday night.

Some residents are calling for the recall of premier Supra Mahumapelo whom they accuse of corruption.

They also have service delivery complaints which some people blame on him.

Similar protests turned violent last week in the provincial capital, Mahikeng.

Shops have been looted and vandalised in Taung. There were running battles between police and protesting residents in Dryharts, near Taung after residents blockaded the N18 route linking Taung and Vryburg.

In Vryburg, police continue to monitor the same route linking Vryburg and Mahikeng.

Meanwhile, Mahumapelo has been quoted as having said only the African National Congress (ANC) can fire him, as it is the one that deploys and redeploys its members to positions of leadership in government.
